A tribal villager will receive a reward of ₹86 lakh for providing crucial information that led to the successful killing of 12 Maoists in an encounter in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district on Wednesday. The encounter, which lasted approximately six hours, was sparked by a tip-off from the villager, according to The Times of India.
The operation, conducted near the Chhattisgarh border, resulted in significant casualties among the Maoists. The deceased include high-profile members such as Yogesh Tulavi alias Narendra (36), Vishal Atram alias Laxman (43), and Pramod Kachlami (31), each carrying a reward of ₹16 lakh. Other Maoists killed include Maharu Gawade (31), Anil Darro (28), Sarita Parsa (37), Rajjo Gawade (35), and Vijju, all of whom were area committee members with a reward of ₹6 lakh each. Additionally, Chanda Podyam, Sita Hawke, Roja, and Sagar were also among the deceased, with a reward of ₹2 lakh each.
Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a separate reward of ₹51 lakh for the commandos who participated in the operation. The police recovered a substantial arsenal from the encounter site, including seven automatic weapons, three AK-47 rifles, two INSAS rifles, a carbine gun, a self-loading rifle (SLR), along with Maoist literature, explosives, and detonators.
The successful operation has reportedly dismantled the Korchi-Tipagad and Chatgaon-Kasansur Dalams of the Naxalites, severely disrupting their activities in the region.
In a related incident, on Wednesday night, two personnel of the Special Task Force (STF) were killed and four others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. The attack occurred in the Tarrem area as a joint team of security personnel was returning from an anti-Maoist operation in the forested tri-junction of Bijapur, Sukma, and Dantewada districts. The situation remains tense as security forces continue their operations against Maoist insurgents in the region.
